Kite Surfing Courses

Big Blue can teach any level of kitesurfer, from a complete beginner with no previous experience to those of you looking to master advanced techniques such as going upwind and jumping.

Kitesurfing courses consist of approximately 5-6 hours tuition a day.

The beginner's course is two days at a cost of £190pp. This covers the use of all equipment, apart from wetsuits, which can be hired from Newsurf next door. Changing rooms and showers are also available. Single days are charged at £95pp.

The aim of a two-day beginner's course is to get you hooked on the best wind sport around and to arm you with all the skills you need to kite surf independently and safely. We can also give advice as to which equipment is right for you.

Big Blue also runs a three day course which gives you longer to master the final stages of the beginners course. This is popular as it leaves you with greater confidence to go it alone. Three-day courses cost £250pp and qualify you to Level 1 IKO.

A Typical Beginners' Course

There is a lot to learn, so kitesurfing is best taught in stages, each stage has to be mastered before combining all the skills together to achieve your first attempt at getting up on the board. Kitesurfing is 80% kite skills, so it is important that you are comfortable flying the kite first. Any small kite flying experience prior to the course is going to be hugely beneficial, but it's not essential!

Here's what we cover:-

Wind Awareness, tidal awareness, site assessments and safety aspects to kite surfing- Essential information you need to know.

Setting up and flying the kite- We will show you how to set up the gear (foil and inflatable kites), avoiding nasty knots and tangles. Then we'll teach you how to launch and land the kites safely.

Flying Skills- This is where you take control of the kite and show it whose boss, learning how to get the kite to take you where you want to go.

Self Rescue Techniques- Essential information on taming a wild kite and recovering yourself in various ways from various situations. Essential Knowledge!

Body dragging- a progression of the flying skills, with more power in the water. Hugely exciting and useful as it happens a lot when you fall off whilst kitesurfing

Harness Technique- A harness takes the strain off your arms and allows you to use more advanced kites. Amongst other things a harness helps you recover the board and to body drag up wind!

Kitesurfing

Here you put all the skills you have learnt together and experience the thrill of planing along on the water powered by your kite. From here it is just a question of practice.
